Two mornings per week students participate in Advisory Circle. The Advisory Circle meeting process is meant to give all students a voice, facilitate a soft landing to start the school day, and enhance strong positive relationships between students and between staff and students.
Open the meeting – Facilitator may tap a chime or illuminate a light source (such as a candle) with a cheery ‘Good Morning” (or whatever time of day is appropriate). This is also a great time to use whatever call-and-response protocol teachers regularly use to personalize their classroom throughout the day.
Attendance – Facilitator checks with the attendance-taker to ensure attendance has been taken.
Greeting – Facilitator asks the greeter to facilitate the greeting for the day. The greeter varies from day to day. Typically, participants greet the person next to them, and answer a prompt for the day. "Good morning, Steve...my favorite food is pizza."
Announcements – Facilitator invites anyone to make short, relevant announcements to the group. During this time any school-wide or grade level announcements are shared with the group.
Acknowledgements – Facilitator invites students to acknowledge peers or members of the broader CGMS community. Facilitator reminds everyone to acknowledge general character or personality traits of others, and provide evidence of behaviors that demonstrate those traits.
Reflection – Facilitator should ask for the reflection to be read (copies may be distributed if that is part of the reflection for the day). This is a short piece of writing - a quote, a poem, a paragraph of text, or other short piece of writing.
Stretches – Facilitator directs attention to the stretches leader/s who will demonstrate and then lead safe, accessible stretches.
Observations – Facilitator should ask the observer to give impression on group (not individual) behaviors and interactions. "We seemed really energized today!"
Close the meeting – Facilitator should extinguish the light source and turn meeting over to the teacher.
Restore the Environment - The entire Advisory Circle should participate in putting the classroom back to “first period” condition.
